Saturday May 23, 2009 - Food in Songs

Well the theme of our gathering this month was certainly one of the most unusual, Food in Songs!  There were 12 members present and our dinner was hosted by the Buckinghams. We began our evening with Pina Coladas and hors d'oeuvres and Pink Champagne.
If you like Pina Coladas, getting caught in the rain
If you're not into yoga, if you have half a brain
If you like making love at midnight in the dunes of the cape
I'm the love that you look for, write to me and escape...

On the table there was a potato casserole with ham, an interpretation of Old McDonald had a Farm , Full of Beans Chile and Cornbread, both Southern and Northern Cornbread, Southern Cornbread has no flour, only cornmeal. Beans and Cornbread . We were also treated to a wonderful chicken and sausage Jambalaya .

had a great quiche and a salad representing the theme from the sitcom Frasier!

Our meal ended with a wonderful Strawberry Tiramisu, a representation of the Beatles, Strawberry Fields Forever .

A great time was had by all! Next meeting of the wonderful Ides Supper Club, June 20th at the Wrights, the theme is BBQ!

Saturday April 18, 2009- Italy

As always, our Ides Supper Club was a success again this month. There were 9 members present and the theme was italian and we had a wonderful meal at Michèle & Jean-Claude's home. Jean-Claude had set the table using three tablecloths, green, white and red as the colours of the Italian flag.  Jolene told us that one of the interpretations of the three colours of the Italian flag are green for hope, white representing faith and red representing charity.

Dan & Colette brought a wonderful hors-d'oeuvre of roasted asparagus wrapped in proscuitto with a aioli dipping sauce, great way to begin. We had three salads, two versions of caprese salad brought by Don & Janet and a antipasto salad provided by the hosts. Our main courses were chicken marsala with a wonderful sauce brought by Jolene and Ted and a very traditional lasagna made by Michèle. Debbie made a delicious free form loaf of bread with parmesan and herbs. It was agreed that this type of bread could not be cut with a knife but pieces torn off was much more appropriate!   Dinner was topped off with a sinfully rich & light textured tiramisu made by Dan.

Conversations were animated, the music was great provided by Jean-Claude and appropriately italian.

Next month will be at Debbie and Jon's home and the theme is Food in Songs on May 23rd.  June 20th will be BBQ at Dan & Colette's home.

Saturday March 21, 2009 - Germany

We had 12 members join us for a wonderful German meal at Colette and Dan's home. Our meal began with Jolene's wonderful Oxtail soup.  As the theme was German, there was lots of sauerkraut, bratwurst and other sausages.   Norm made a wonderful meatball stew, very fragrant. We also had a wonderful cold cabbage salad, nicely crunchy and a warm potato salad.  The meal was topped off by Dan's great Black Forest cake laced with kirsch and Debbie's superb apple torte.

As always Ted and Jolene got into the spirit by dressing the part, Jolene in a dirndl skirted dress and Ted with Lederhosen. I wish I had my camera!

We had a fun conversation about a future theme of food in songs, lots of Weird Al Yankovic tunes and others. Serious songs such as "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme" by Simon and Garfunkel and Sammy Davis Jr. "The Candy Man". May will be a fun reunion of the Ides Club!

April 18th will be our next reunion, Italian at the Dextras/Barre home. See you there!

Saturday February 21 2009 - Australia and New Zealand

As always we had  a very enjoyable evening with good food and wine and great company! The theme this month was food from Australia and New Zealand at Ted & Jolene's home. We began with an appetizer, Wasabi Salmon Fingers with a kiwi dipping sauce.  As food from down under seems to be all about meat, our main meal had lots of meat, a green salad with mandarin and chicken, a beef stir fry made with marmite that is the British equivalent of vegemite, popular in Australia, and wonderful marinated lamb chops.  The meal was topped off with individual pavlova dipped in Lindt chocolate and with a mound of fruit, papaya, kiwi and mango and of course, whipped cream.

Conversation was very animated and our guest for the evening Helen who came with Debbie seems to want to come back!

Junior Ides played Wii games upstairs and enjoyed Jolene's home made bread. We also all participated in an experiment for Ben's math class, sampling 5 different cookies and rating them.

Next month's Ides Club will be held at Dan and Colette's home with a German theme. Looking forward to it!

Saturday January 17, 2009 - Celebratory Foods

The event was held at the Buckinghams. This is our 50th event in 5 years, excellent reason to celebrate! The champagne Veuve Cliquot and bubblies from California and Australia flowed.  With the champagne there were great hors d'oeuvres, blinis with caviar and smoked salmon, a wonderful dip and pork nibbles.

Dinner included a Pork Crown Roast, Porcupine Meatballs, Stuffed Pasta Shells, Asparagus in Hollandaise sauce and a wonderful Dome Zuccatto for dessert. Great wines flowed and an interesting raspberry wine from the Prince Edward County region and an interesting Liqueur from Ghana.
